How to Interpret IQ Percentiles
Percentile vs. Percentage
A percentile rank is a comparative ranking, not a test score percentage. Scoring at the 90th percentile does not mean you answered 90% of questions correctly—it means your score was higher than 90% of all people who took the standardized test.
Why 100 is Always the 50th Percentile
By mathematical definition, IQ scores follow a symmetric normal distribution centered at exactly 100. Exactly half (50%) of all test takers score below 100, and exactly half score above 100.
Exponential Rarity at the Tails
Because the bell curve tapers off rapidly, increasing your score from 100 to 115 moves you past 34% of the population, whereas moving from 130 to 145 moves you past only 2.1% of people—into the rarest top 0.1% tier.
